鞭笞（上必綿反顧野王馬策曰鞭策音楚革反說文駈馳也從革便聲下丑之反漢書音義笞者捶也說文亦擊也從竹台聲也）。

Whipping and flogging [鞭笞] (the first character has the fanqie: 必 + 綿. Gu Yewang says: “A horse whip is called bian; ce has the fanqie: 楚 + 革.” The Shuowen says: “To drive forward swiftly; with the radical 革 [leather] and bian phonetic.” The lower character has the fanqie: 丑 + 之. The Hanshu yinyi says: “Chi means beating with a stick.” The Shuowen also says: “To strike; with the radical 竹 [bamboo] and tai phonetic”).
