耐痛（上乃岱顧野王耐猶能也蘇林曰二歲已上形為耐亦能任其罪也杜林漢書注凡為法度字皆從寸說文從寸而聲也）。

Endure pain [耐痛] (the first character has the fanqie: 乃 + 岱. Gu Yewang says: “Nai is like being able to.” Su Lin says: “Shaving the beard for over two years is nai; it also means being able to bear one's punishment.” Du Lin's commentary on the Hanshu says: “Characters for laws and measures all take the radical 寸.” The Shuowen gives it with the radical 寸 and er phonetic).
