醻鑿(傳文作酬酢非正字上醻音讎 鑿音昨毛詩注醻勸也爾雅醻報也文字釋訓云以言對答也說文主客獻酬以禮成也或作詶集訓云以言荅也傳文字書酬酢錯用非也案醻鑿者提婆菩薩以正理醻對外道也古人有言曰不道則不知不鑿即不徹故譯經者有酬酢文言字非正體今據古今篆隸以正之也)。
Chouzuo [醻鑿] (the text of the biography writes it as 酬酢, which are not the standard characters; the first character is pronounced *chou*, the second is pronounced *zuo*; the commentary on the *Mao Shijing* says: '*Chou* means to encourage'; the *Erya* says: '*Chou* means to repay'; the *Wenzi shixun* states: 'To respond with words'; the *Shuowen jiezi* states: 'Host and guest offering wine to each other, bringing ritual to completion'; it is also written as 詶; the *Jixun* states: 'To respond with words'; the characters used in the biography, 酬酢, are erroneous substitutions and incorrect. Investigating *chouzuo*: Bodhisattva Āryadeva responded to and refuted non-Buddhists with correct principles. The ancients had a saying: 'If it is not spoken, it will not be understood; if it is not chiseled through [鑿], it will not penetrate.' Therefore the translators used the literary expression 酬酢, but the characters were not the standard forms; here I correct them based on ancient and modern seal and clerical scripts).
