(The first character has the fanqie mo + ban. The Guangya says: '蠻 means rude and slow [慢].' The Shuowen says: 'The Southern Man people; of serpent breed. It takes 虫 as semantic classifier and 䜌 as phonetic.' The second character is pronounced lao. The Zishu says: 'In Zangke there are Liao barbarians.' The Yiwu ming says: 'The Liao barbarians are a class of beasts: their desires know no restraint, and they use humans for cooked dishes. When bearing grudges in mind, they kill; they stealthily move under water to spear and take fish and turtles. When dead, they bury the coffin upright and do not lie down.' This is erroneous. The Shuowen says: 'It takes 犬 as semantic classifier and 尞 as phonetic.' 䜌 has the fanqie li + zhuan).
