僧澀多（師戢反梵語也澀字說文從四止二倒二正即澀也從水亦是目錄中及諸經中多從三止作澁非會意字也）。

Sēngsèduō (僧澀多; the middle [character] has the fanqie [shī + jí]; a Sanskrit term. For the character sè (澀), the Shuowen states that it is composed of four '止' (two inverted, two upright), meaning rough/astringent; writing it with '水' (water) is also acceptable. In the table of contents and across various sūtras it is mostly written with three '止' as '澁', which is not an ideographic compound).
