Awakened with a start (驚覺; the second character has the fanqie 交効 [ji- + -ào], or read according to its standard graph as 角 [jué]; the Kaosheng says: "覺 means waking from sleep"; Gu Yewang says: "To sleep"; the Shuowen jiezi says: "To wake up; it takes 'seeing' (見) with an abbreviated 学 as phonetic; it is a borrowed phonetic character").
