Tattered banner (敝幡) (the upper character is [pronounced] 毘 + 袂 [pí-mèi > bì]; the commentary to the Zuo zhuan says: "敝 means ruined, worn out"; the lower character has the sound 番 [fān] and takes the "cloth" radical [巾]; the Shuowen jiezi writes the character 敝 as 㡀, taking 八 and 巾, representing torn and ruined clothes).
