虹蜺 [Rainbows] (Hu + tong fan. The Erya says: 'The didong is a 虹.' The Yueling says: 'In the last month of spring, the rainbow begins to appear; in the first month of winter, the rainbow begins to hide and is not seen.' The Hanshu writes it as 虫, also pronounced jiang. The Shuowen says: 'It resembles an insect, hence it is written with 虫, pronounced hui, with 工 as phonetic.' In ancient script it was written as 羾; in the seal script as [工*(奄-大+田)], from 电, where 电 means lightning. The second character is wu + ji fan. Guo Pu's commentary on the Erya says: 'The female rainbow.' It appears in the Lisao. It is also written as 霓. The Erya says: 'The didong is called a yu,' pronounced yu; it also says: 'The secondary rainbow is called a qie'er.' Guo Pu says: 'Qie'er is an alternative name, seen in the Shizi').
