芬馥(上芳文反考聲香氣也古文從屮作𡵳屮音丑列反說文草初生香氣分布從屮分聲也今隷書從草作芬芬和也經從香作馚非也下馮目反韓詩芬馥香氣皃也)。

Sweet and fragrant (芬馥: the upper character is fang-wen [fanqie]. The Kaosheng says: "Fragrant vapor." In ancient script it derives from 屮 as 𡵳; 屮 has the phonetic reading chou-lie [fanqie]. The Shuowen says: "When plants first sprout, their fragrant vapor disperses; it takes its semantic classifier from 屮 and 分 is the phonetic." In modern clerical script it derives from 草 as 芬; 芬 means harmonious. In the sutra it is written with 香 as 馚, which is incorrect. The lower character is feng-mu [fanqie]. The Han Shi says: "芬馥 describes the appearance of fragrant vapor").
