桎梏(上真曰反下公沃反鄭玄注周禮在手曰桎在足曰梏盖刑人具也鄭眾又云桎梏者枸其兩手共一木也說文二字並從木至告亦聲)。
桎梏 (the first character is *zh[ēn]-yuè* fanqie; the second character is *g[ōng]-wò* fanqie. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the *Rites of Zhou* says: “Placed on the hands it is called *zhì* (桎); placed on the feet it is called *gù* (梏). They are implements for punishing people.” Zheng Zhong also says: “*Zhìgù* means restraining both hands together in a single piece of wood.” The *Shuowen jiezi* says both characters are composed of ‘wood’ (木), with *zhì* (至) and *gào* (告) also serving as phonetics).
