Holding up the monk's staff (揭錫: the first character is pronounced *jie* [jiē]. The *Shuowen jiezi* says: '揭 in carrying on a shoulder pole means lifting up high.' The *Gujin zhengzi* states: 'Formed from the "hand" radical (手) with *he* (曷) as the phonetic component.').
