Planting ramie (種紵: the second character is pronounced *chu* + *lü* [zhù]. The 'Director of Bast' section of the *Rites of Zhou* says: 'Ramie (紵) is a type of hemp-like grass.' Zheng Xuan's commentary says: 'Cloth woven with fifteen *ye* (lengths) of cord, combed until fine and white, is called *zhu* (ramie).' The *Shuowen jiezi* says: 'It is a finer variety belonging to the abutilon family; it is formed from the "silk" radical (系) with *zhu* (宁) as the phonetic component.' The sound of 宁 is the same as above).
