穹廬 Dome-shaped tent (yurt) (the first character is pronounced [in fanqie] 丘 + 弓; Guo Pu says: "The vault of heaven is domed and arched, hence it is named after it." The second character is pronounced [in fanqie] 呂 + 居; Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "廬 means a cottage/hut." The Mao Shijing commentary says: "廬 means a temporary lodging." The Hetu says: "The Yellow Emperor made huts to avoid heat and cold." Note: Yurts (穹廬) are felt huts and tents used by the northern and western barbarians; the top is high and rounded, resembling the grand vault of the sky, and is lofty and vast, hence called 穹廬 ('vaulted hut'). The residences of kings and chieftains can accommodate a hundred people; ordinary commoners have their entire family live together in a single tent. When on the move, they pack them on horses and camels and carry the felt tents away).
