莽莽 (Mang [恾] + bang [牓] fanqie. The Chuci says: 'Vegetation is mangmang (莽莽).' Wang Yi's commentary says: 'Mangmang means flourishing.' The Guangya says: 'Mangmang means luxuriant.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'In Nanchang, it refers to a dog that is good at chasing hares in the grass; it depicts a mang (莽).' It has quan 'dog' and mang (茻) as phonetic. In the transmission, writing it with shui 'water' as 𣾘, meaning the appearance of vast waters, is incorrect).
