芟夷（上所銜反毛詩芟除草也說文從艸殳聲下以之反爾雅云夷平也又滅也周禮以水殄草而芟夷之也文字典說夷狄之人好大弓故從大從弓）。

芟夷 (Mowing down and exterminating: the first is *srjo-haem* [shān]; the Maoshi [says]: "*Shan* means weeding grass." The Shuowen [says]: "Formed with the grass radical and phonetic *shu*." The second is *yi-tsyi* [yí]; the Erya says: "*Yi* means to level; also to destroy." The Zhouli [says]: "Using water to destroy weeds and mow them down." The Wenzidian shuo [says]: "The Yi and Di barbarians favoured large bows, hence formed with the great radical and the bow radical").
