洶湧（上凶拱反說文洶即涌也謂水波騰皃也從水匈聲下容種反說文涌亦騰也從水勇聲亦作涌也）。

洶湧 (surging violently: the first character is xiong1 [inauspicious] + gong3 [to cup hands] fanqie. The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Xiong (洶) is yong (湧); it refers to the surging appearance of water waves.' It takes 水 as radical and xiong1 as phonetic. The lower character is rong2 [capacity] + zhong3 [seed] fanqie. The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Yong (湧) also means to surge.' It takes 水 as radical and yong3 as phonetic; also written as 涌).
