Favoured minister [嬖臣] (補 plus 悌 fanqie. Du's commentary on the *Zuo zhuan* states: "嬖 means intimate and favoured." Liu Xi's commentary on the *Hanshu* states: "It means lowly." The *Shuowen* has it with 'woman' [女] and 辟 phonetic).
