Providing funeral assistance (給賻: [賻 is] fu-wu fan [fù]. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Zhouli says: “It means to assist with money the mourning household to make up for deficiencies.” The Gongyang zhuan says: “In funeral matters, using money and goods [to help] is called fu.” The Guliang zhuan says: “Giving to the deceased is called zeng; giving to the living is called fu.” The Shuowen [jiezi] says: “Formed with 貝 ('cowrie/wealth') and fu phonetic.”).
