挻埴（上傷延反下承力反淮南子云陶人之挻埴也許注云挻押也孔注尚書云埴黏土也釋名膩土也如脂之膩滑也如淳曰挻擊也埴柔也和也說文挻字從手埴字從土形聲字也）。

挻埴 (The first character is *sh-y-, the second *ch-l-. The Huainanzi says: "The potter's kneading of clay." Xu's commentary says: "挻 means to press." Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: "埴 is sticky clay." The Shiming says: "Greasy earth; slippery like fat." Ru Chun says: "挻 means to strike; 埴 means soft and harmonious." The Shuowen jiezi says: "挻 is formed from 手, and 埴 is formed from 土; both are phono-semantic characters.")
