河湍（湯官反字書云湍急瀨也許叔重注淮南子云湍疾水也瀨淺水也說文湍亦瀨也從水耑聲耑音端論文從土非也）。

河湍 (*tang* + *guan* in fanqie [tuān]; character books say: '湍 means rapid shallows'; Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the *Huainanzi* says: '湍 is rapid water; 瀨 is shallow water'; the *Shuowen* says: '湍 is also shallow rapids; semantic 水 (water), phonetic 耑; 耑 sounds like 端 [duān]'; in the treatise it is written with the earth radical, which is incorrect).
