Competing in beauty (競妍: [the second character is] *yan-jian* [y- + -án = yán] in fanqie; the Guangya says: “妍 means good.” The sound 姸 means beautiful; it is categorized under 'woman' with 幵 (*qian* [qiān]) as phonetic; the Gujin zhengzi gives the orthodox form as 姸, written with two 干 side by side; in the treatise it is written as 妍, which is a vulgar character).
