刁斗（上鳥聊反下兜偶反孟康注漢書云以銅為之受一斗晝炊飲食夜擊以警眾持行隨軍在熒陽庫中今改為金鉦是也古今正字云二字並象形也象斗有柄論作升誤）。

刁斗 Soldier's kettle: the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 鳥 + 聊; the second is pronounced with the fanqie 兜 + 偶. Meng Kang's commentary on the Book of Han says: 'It is made of bronze and holds one dou; by day it is used to cook food, and by night it is struck to alert the troops. It is carried along with the army, and kept in the armory at Xingyang; nowadays it has been changed to a bronze gong (zheng).' The Gujin zhengzi states: 'Both characters are pictographs, resembling a dipper with a handle.' The treatise's writing of it as 升 is an error.
