Severing ears (𢧵馘) (the first character is pronounced qian-jie fan; the Shuowen says: "Jie [𢧵] means to cut off; it follows the halberd radical [戈] with que [雀] phonetic." The second character is pronounced gong-huo fan; the Mao Commentary on the Shijing says: "Guo means capture; of those who do not surrender, one kills them and presents their ears, which is called guo." Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Liji says: "It means taking captives alive and cutting off ears." The Shuowen says: "Cutting off ears in battle; it follows the head radical [首] with huo [或] phonetic; correctly written with the ear radical [耳] as 聝").
