Level shafts (比轅: [轅 is] *yuan* [*yuán* / yuǎn yuán], the Kaogong ji says: 'When the cartwright makes a cart, for the shafts he makes them three times the wheel's circumference; dividing their length into three parts, two are in front and one behind.' The Shuowen says: 'The shaft of a carriage; [derived] from 車 with a 𡊮 phonogram').
