Subdue and prune ( [今*戈]翦: the former is *kan* [*kān* / kǎn gān], Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '戡 means to overcome.' The Shangshu dazhuan says: 'To vanquish.' The Shuowen says: 'To kill; 今 is the phonogram.' The ancient script writes 勘; the treatise writes 戡, a commonly used popular character. The latter is *jian* [*jiǎn* / jiān xiǎn], meaning to cut off).
