Dry rations and grain (餱粮: [First character] hòu-gōu fan; the Mao commentary on the Shijing states that hóu means food. The Shuowen [jiezi] states it means dry rations, and is composed of 'food' [食] with hóu [侯] phonetic. In collected texts it is written as 糇, which is a vulgar character. [Second character] lì-zhāng fan; Kong's commentary on the Shangshu states that liáng means storing and stocking grain in storehouses to provide sufficient food.
