芟薙（所銜反毛詩云芟除草也說文從草從殳下體計反鄭注禮記薙迫地芟草燒之草不復生大雨降其地美可耕稼也說文從草雉聲）。

Clear and weed (芟薙): [The first character is pronounced] *suo* + *xian* fan. The Mao commentary on the Book of Odes says: 'To mow (芟) means to clear weeds.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is formed with [the semantic classifier] grass (草) and the semantic component *shu* (殳).' The second character is pronounced *ti* + *ji* fan. Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Book of Rites says: 'Weeding (薙) means cutting down weeds close to the ground and burning them, so the grass will not grow back; when heavy rains fall, the land becomes fertile and can be tilled and planted.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is formed with [the semantic classifier] grass (草) and the phonetic component *zhi* (雉).'
