Kong [Anguo's] commentary on the Book of Documents says: 'It means sage-like.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is formed from 𣦻, eye (目), and the abbreviated phonetic component *gu* (谷).' In ancient script it is written as 睿, in seal script as 叡. The Jiwen writes it as 叡, which is not [correct]. The character 𣦻 is pronounced *zai* + *an* fan.
