Clearing the path of travel (之蹕): [The second character is pronounced] *bin* + *mi* fan. Zheng [Xuan's] commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: 'Clearing the route (蹕) means stopping travelers and clearing the roads, like modern imperial road-clearing alerts (警蹕).' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is formed with [the semantic classifier] foot (足) and the phonetic component *bi* (畢).'
