The Erya says: 'The lin has the body of a jun, the tail of an ox, and a single horn with flesh at the tip.' Gu Yewang says: 'The male is called qi, and the female is called lin.' Shuowen jiezi says: 'It takes 鹿 [deer] as semantic and 粦 as phonetic.' It is also written 𪊺. The second character is fanqie 軌筠. The Gongyang zhuan says: 'It has the form of a mi-deer with horns.' Liu Zhao says: 'A river deer (zhang).' The Shijing says: 'In the wilds lies a dead jun.' Shuowen jiezi says: 'This is the seal-script form of the character jun, correctly taking 鹿 [deer] as semantic and the abbreviation of 囷 as phonetic.' It is commonly and interchangeably written 麇, both being identical).
