髫年 (Childhood years): The first character is read fanqie *ti[án]-[y]áo* [tiáo]. The *Cangjiepian* states: '髫 (*tiáo*) refers to children's tufts of hair.' The *Wenzi jilüe* writes it with 周 as 䯾, meaning a small child's hair. The *Zitong* states: '髫 is hair styled as an ornament for small children.' The *Wenzi dianlüe* states: 'It is classified under the radical *biāo* (long hair) with *zhào* (召) phonetic; it is also written with the tooth radical as 齠.' 髦 is pronounced *máo*.
