To achieve victory (for the first [character 克], 'ke' is like able; the Erya says: “To overcome.” In the transmission text it is written following 刀 as 剋, which is the same. For the second [character 捷], q- + [y]e [jié]; the commentary to the Mao classic of Poetry says: “'Jie' means victory.” Du's commentary to the Zuo commentary says: “'Jie' also means overcoming.” The Kaosheng says: “Overcoming in battle is called 'jie'.” The Shuowen says: “'Jie' means catching / taking. It follows 手 (hand) and has 疌 as its phonetic.” 疌 has the same sound).
