Contending with (與䡈; the second character is jiāng-yuè fan [jiào]. The Guangya says: 'Jiào means manifest.' The Gujin zhengzi says: 'To test superiority and inferiority.' Derived from chē 車 [cart] with yáo 爻 as phonetic. The transmission writing it with jiāo 交 is a vulgar character; it was already explained in the earlier [entries on] the Biographies of Eminent Monks).
