Hunting (畋獵; the first character is pronounced tián [tián]. The Shangshu says: 'Hunting beyond the Luo River.' Upon examination, tián means to hunt. He's commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: 'Tián is the collective name for searching and tracking game.' It is also written with quǎn 犬 [dog] as 𤝗. The second character is lián-zhé fan [liè]. Zheng's commentary on the Mao Commentary to the Classic of Poetry says: 'Night hunting is called liè.' Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: 'Liè means to catch.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Practicing hunting to pursue birds and beasts so they do not harm the crops, offering what is captured in the ancestral temple. Derived from quǎn 犬 [dog] with liè 巤 as phonetic.' The transmission text writing it with shān 山 [mountain] and niǎo 鳥 [bird] as 𭸯 does not form a character and is incorrect).
