Washing and rinsing (洒漱; the first character is xī-lǐ fan [xǐ]. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Sǎ means washing; derived from shuǐ 水 [water] with xī 西 as phonetic.' The transmission writing it with xiān 先 as xǐ 洗 is a vulgar character. The second character is sōu-yòu fan [shù]; it was already explained in full in the preceding text).
