私覘 (secretly spying: the first character is the orthodox character for 'private' (私). The second character is a fanqie of 諂 and 焰 [chān]; Zheng's commentary to the Liji states: '覘 means to peek and watch.' Du's commentary to the Zuozhuan states: '覘 means to spy on.' The Shuowen analyzes it as semantic 見 and phonetic 占).
