竹笴矟 [bamboo-shafted lances]: The middle character, gǎn (笴), is read with the fanqie ge + han (gǎn). The Shangshu dazhuan says: 'Gǎn is like the shaft and notch of the archery ceremony.' Zheng Xuan's commentary says: 'The shaft of an arrow.' The Gujin zhengzi says it is composed of the [semantic] radical 'bamboo' (竹) and the sound kě (可). The last character is read with the fanqie shuang + zhuo (shuò). The Guangya says: 'Shuò means a lance.' The Picang says: 'Shuò is a lance one zhang and eight chi long.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'The ji-lance of today. It is composed of the [semantic] radical 'lance' (矛) and the sound xiào (肖).' In the transmitted text it is written with the [radical] 'water' as 槊, which is a vulgar character.
