斷覈 'Judge and examine' (The first character has the fanqie [端亂, *twanH*], meaning to decide a legal case. The second character has the fanqie [衡革, *haek*]. The Book of Han states: 'To examine their crimes.' The Shuowen states: 'To investigate the real facts.' It derives from 西 [west]—西 having the fanqie [呀賈, *xjaX*]—and has the sound 敫; 敫 is pronounced 擊 [*kek*]).
