Repeated famines (荐餧, the first character has the fanqie 錢廌 [jiàn]; the Kaosheng says: "Consecutive years of poor harvests are called 荐"; the Shuowen says: "Derived from 草 with 存 as its phonetic"; the second character has the fanqie 奴猥 [něi]; Kong's commentary on the Lunyu says: "餧 means starving; an associative transfer character derived from 食 with 委 as its phonetic").
