Fields and irrigation canals (畎澮: the first character is fanqie juan + xuan [quǎn]; the second is fanqie huai + wai [kuài]. The Shuowen says: "Kuài describes the flowing waters of canals." Character dictionaries properly write it with two亅 characters as 刂: 'For an area of one hundred square li there is a canal (刂), two xún wide and two rèn deep'").
