Ominous vapors (氛祲: the first character is pronounced 紛 [fēn]; the second character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 子鴆 [jìn]. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli states: '祲 refers to the vapors of yin and yang gradually encroaching upon each other to form disasters.' Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan states: '祲 refers to malevolent vapors.' The Shuowen jiezi states: '祲 refers to vapors provoking omens; it takes the "altar" radical and the abbreviated 侵 phonetic').
