Mire and mud (泥濘) (the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 禰抵 [mǐ + dǐ -> nǐ]; Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '泥 refers to ground wet with spring water'; Gu Yewang says: '泥 is simply mud, earth that becomes slushy upon contact with water'; the Gujin zhengzi gives it with the water radical (水) and 尼 phonetic; the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 寧定 [níng + dìng -> nìng]; the Zuozhuan says: 'They turned back into the mire and came to a halt'; Du Yu's commentary says: '濘 means mud'; the Guangya says: 'It means clear'; the Shuowen says: '滎濘 means watery mud; it is composed of the water radical (水) with 寧 phonetic').
