玁狁烽爟（上覆容反字書正作烽史記烽舉燧也郭璞注方言云烽燧火也說文云烽候邊有警急則舉火也從火夆聲下官亂反說文云爟火舉也從火雚聲）。

玁狁烽爟 ('Xianyun beacon fires': [烽] has the fanqie 覆容 [fù + róng]; character dictionaries take 烽 as the orthodox character. The Shiji says: 'Beacon fires raise the signal smoke.' Guo Pu's commentary to the Fangyan says: '烽燧 means signal fires.' The Shuowen says: 'Beacons are signal fires raised when there is an alert on the border. It is derived from 火 (fire) with 夆 as phonetic.' The second character has the fanqie 官亂 [guān + luàn]. The Shuowen says: '爟 means the raising of fires. It is derived from 火 (fire) with 雚 as phonetic').
