Qilin 麒𪊭 (The upper character is pronounced fanqie 巨之; the lower is 栗真. The Kaosheng says: "The lin-lin 麟𪊭 is an auspicious beast." The Gongyang zhuan says: "A benevolent beast." The Erya says: "With the body of a musk deer, the tail of an ox, the hooves of a deer, and a single horn." Guo says: "The tip of the horn has flesh." Gu Yewang says: "The female is called qi 麒, and the male is called lin 𪊭. When a king of sagely virtue extends his benevolence to birds and beasts, they arrive in his suburbs." The Shuowen writes them as [鹿/其] and [鹿/宏], and its explanation is the same as the Erya; both characters have the 'deer' radical and the phonetic components qi 其 and lin 𠫤. Writing it as 麟 is incorrect. Collected editions writing qilin 騏麟 refer to the name of a fine steed).
