Pray and petition (禱: fanqie 刀考 [dǎo]. Zheng Xuan says: "To seek blessings." Bao Xian notes on the Lunyu: "'To pray' is to petition; to petition the ghosts and spirits." The Guangya states: "To thank." The Shuowen jiezi states: "Announcing matters to seek blessings is called dǎo. Composed of 示 ('altar') with 壽 phonetic").
