蒹葭（上音兼下革遐反說文兼葭荻蘆未秀者也蒹曰荻葭曰蘆並從草兼叚皆聲也）。

Reeds and rushes 蒹葭 (the upper character has the sound 兼 [jiān]; the lower has the fanqie: 革遐 [jiā]). The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Reeds and rushes are di (荻) and lu (蘆) before they have flowered. The jian is called di; the jia is called lu.' Both take 草 ('grass') as semantic, with 兼 and 叚 as phonetic.
