"Flurried and burdened" (鞅掌): The first character [鞅 has the fanqie] yang + yang (yang); the second character [掌 has the fanqie] zhang + rang (zhang). Zheng's gloss on the Mao Commentary to the Book of Odes says: 'Yang is like carrying on the back; zhang is like bearing in the hands.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It has the leather radical (革) and yang (央) phonetic.' The compiled text mistakenly writes it with the sun radical (日) as ying (映), pronounced yu + lang (yang), which refers to an obscure appearance; that is not the intended meaning of yang (鞅).
