Strangling him ( [縕-囚+(三*三)]之: [the first character is pronounced] yi + er fan; Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says that yi ([縕-囚+(三*三)]) means death by hanging; the Shuowen jiezi says it also means hanging, composed of 'silk' [糸] with yi [益] phonetic; the standard form uses 益; the compiled text writes the popular character 縊).
