八埏 (pronounced *yǎn-zhān* [yán]. The *Hanshu yinyi* says: The *bāyán* are the boundaries of the earth. The *Gujin zhengzi* says: It refers to the eight borders of the earth. It is formed from 'earth' with *yán* also phonetic).
