荼蓼（上獨奴反爾雅云荼苦菜也下聊鳥反毛詩傳云蓼水草也說文辛菜也並從草余翏皆聲翏音劉救反）。

荼蓼 (Bitter herbs and smartweed: the first is *tú* [fanqie: 獨奴]. The *Erya* states: "*Tú* is a bitter green." The second is *liǎo* [fanqie: 聊鳥]. The commentary to the *Mao Commentary to the Book of Odes* states: "*Liǎo* is a water weed." The *Shuowen jiezi* states: "A pungent green." Both are classified under 'grass' (艸), with 余 and 翏 as their respective phonetics; 翏 is pronounced *liù* [fanqie: 劉救]).
